SUMMARY 

The Fabrication Technician II assists or performs fabricating, assembling, modifying, and repairing various articles of fabric and other materials. Knowledge of sewing, stitching and bonding techniques typically performed on heavy, industrial weight fabrics, using industrial equipment, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) sewing machines, manually operated sewing machines, and even hand-stitching if/when necessary in support of the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL) aeromedical research and development. This position is 100% onsite in Fort Novosel, AL.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS  

 Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship. 

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a minimum of three (3) years’ relevant experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education/experience. 

Completes a formal civilian or military training program as a manual machinist with at least 10 years of practical application of those skills. 

Familiar with personal protective equipment (PPE) used in the safe operation of modern fabrication equipment, knowledge and experience in 3D modeling and manufacturing software, CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing), and practical application of designing, fabricating, modifying, and installation of field research equipment. 

 

The ability to conceptualize and design devices from researchers' sketches, descriptions, or instructions.  

 

knowledge of engineering principles and design, along with a working knowledge of material properties and modern fabrication techniques with at least 5 years using CNC (Computer Numerical Control) based systems. 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Skill in critical thinking and problem solving.  

 

Perform duties concerned with the safe operation of a fabrication and prototyping facility.  

Demonstrated ability to interpret instructions, specifications (blueprint drawings, schematics, sketches) demonstrate technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic). Work from written or oral instructions.  

 

Willing to perform difficult and complex tasks.  

 

Possess advanced knowledge of materials, measurement, and layout.  

 

Ability to operate standard high-speed industrial sewing machines, heat sealers and other machines specific to the project. Clean and perform machine maintenance, troubleshoot, and resolve malfunctions on commercial machines. 

 

Operate hand tools (pliers, shears, hammers, gromet setters, searing scissors). 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a minimum of three (3) years’ relevant experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education/experience. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

Sit for prolonged periods of time with continual movement of hands, arms, and fingers for sewing operations. Often handles pieces of fabric that are consistently heavy and bulky. Work involves continuous standing and walking on concrete floors, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching above heads and occasionally working in irregular body postures while sewing. Lifting: This position has a requirement to lift 40lbs. - 70 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
