The Jr. Broadcast Design Engineer (IT Systems) supports the Project Manager and Technical Officer with the organization and logistical coordination of all aspects of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of the Associate Director of (OADC) Broadcast Engineering Services. This position provides engineering services and support to facilitate the design, installation, maintenance and modification of broadcast grade, high definition television (HDTV) IT-based equipment and systems.

 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the public presence and the dissemination point for worldwide public health education and information.  The CDC facilities are digital and High-Definition (HD) broadcast, and graphic production and distribution facilities.  These services utilize broadcast, satellite, videotape, web and computer-based delivery, while embracing emerging technologies for CDC Centers, Institutes and offices.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Performs equipment troubleshooting and configurations.

 

Provides technical support for special projects and events.

Interacts with customers and business partners when developing interfaces.

 

Works closely with team members and customers to research and troubleshoot issues.

 

Documents systems as they are built.

 

Designs documents that support information systems which are compliant with all CDC and federal security guidance for enterprise architectures.

 

Supports the business needs of the customer.

 

Documents test results for systems and integration testing and interface testing.

 

Makes recommendations for technical solutions based on business needs.

 

Manages and maintains computer systems, demonstrates management skills in planning, organizing, developing, managing, and documenting activities.

 

Provides monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual reports to OADC from systems as requested.

 

Troubleshoots problems identified by users and communicates the solutions and program changes to the OADC Team and staff.

 

Recommends, develops and provides end-user training for applications and databases.

 

Performs periodic (at least monthly) quality control checks of OADC web sites, reports, and databases. These quality checks monitor the accuracy of the information contained on the websites and in the reports and databases.

 

Proposes, and acquires CDC approval of the processes and procedures for accomplishing all quality checks including deliverables. Deliverables shall include a description of the quality check, the status of any findings, and any corrective actions taken.

 

Makes recommendations to improve the customer/client specifications.

 

Oversees customer needs with on-sight logistics.

 

Takes guidance and direction from the Project Manager for various assignments.

 

Prepares reports as needed, collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.

 

Participates in Quality Assurance Programs that include daily inspections and reviews to address areas in need of improvement.

 

Assists in providing alternative approaches to meeting client/customer demands while staying within property guidelines.

 

Continually looks for new and better ways to service groups and internal departments.

 

Performs any or all other duties as assigned.

 

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to any training made available by the company.

 

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.

 

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; and five (5) years’ of experience in the broadcast, post-production and NLE industries or related experience and or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience using Microsoft Office, Project, Editing and SAN maintenance software.

 

Experience with the following:

 

IT management for 64-bit editing stations with Matrox (RTX and Axio) hardware

IT management for 32-bit power stations

IT management for Facilis 9TB virtual volume SAN

IT management for FIA Inc., 1 TB NAS and users

IT management for 50 nodes network rendering farm

IT management for Avid video editing systems hardware and software

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
