The Lead Air Traffic Controller is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the NGB ATC requirements and managing direct reports. The Lead Air Traffic Controller coordinates the movement of air traffic, to ensure that aircraft stay safe distances apart.



Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Manages ATC direct reports. 


Monitors, transmits, and receives all ATC frequencies, and will document any unauthorized use of the ATC frequency.


Directs movement of vehicles on runaways.


Checks flight plans.


Gives pilots clearance for takeoff or landing.


Directs the movement of aircraft and other traffic on runways and other parts of the airport.


Communicates with adjacent terminal and enroute facilities and specified airfield/installation agencies/staff.


Manages and maintains all recorded records IAW AR 95-2 and TC 3-04.81.


Activates the PCAS after receiving notification of an aircraft emergency, accident, or incident.


Provides routine weather observation augmenting fixed based weather observations. This includes identifying and reporting weather elements that are considered operationally significant, e.g. tornadoes, hail, thunderstorms, etc.


Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to any training made available by the company.


Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output. Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.


Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.



Graduate of a US military ATC or FAA Academy and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience performing ATC Tower Duties.



Possess a current Control Tower Operator Certification


Qualified for Controller in Charge Program / Certification



Excellent customer service and active listening skills with the ability to handle unusual or complex situations with a calm and focused approach


Ability to lead a team to the successful conclusion of a mission


Basic knowledge and understanding of computer technology and related tools (i.e., tablets, notebooks, applications, video simulations, etc.)


Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio, etc.)


Excellent verbal and written communications skills with ability to read and interpret materials such as diagrams and manuals


Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of management and coworkers, as well as a wide range of people with diverse backgrounds


Ability to respond to requests in a professional, helpful and timely manner


Ability to use tact in handling difficult individuals and/or situations


Solid critical thinking skills with ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems / issues


Ability to work in a fast-paced, stressful environment and to learn / apply new knowledge and techniques related to technologic simulations and training exercises


Ability to be proactive, take initiative and accept accountability for assigned work functions


Flexible with ability to work a variety of shift assignments, including inclement weather conditions


Ability to be reliable and punctual


Ability to effectively work both independently and in a team environment



Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. 



Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.



Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
