SUMMARY

The Senior Weather Services Operations Manager (WSOM) will lead the services team in investigating atmospheric phenomena and interpreting meteorological data gathered by surface, air stations, satellites, and radar to prepare reports and forecasts for public and other uses. The WSOM will manage the daily operations on-site and coordinate contract/project business operation with the customer and project management office. The WSOM will assist and fill in service gaps as required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Manages daily operations on-site and coordinates contract/project business operation with the customer and project management office. Provides management of personnel, rotation schedules and logistics coordination for project execution.

 

Collects and analyze historical climate information such as precipitation and temperature records in order to help predict future weather and climate trends.

 

Conducts basic or applied meteorological research into the processes and determinants of atmospheric phenomena, weather, and climate.

 

Gathers data from sources such as surface and upper air stations, satellites, weather bureaus, and radar for use in meteorological reports and forecasts.

 

Prepares forecasts and briefings to meet the needs of industry, business, government, and other groups.

 

Study’s and interprets data, reports, maps, photographs, and charts to predict long and short range weather conditions, using computer models and knowledge of climate theory, physics, and mathematics.

 

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

 

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output. 

 

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers.  Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources.  Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

 

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

Associates degree in related field with two (2) years’ experience or education through a military weather observation / forecasting school is required.  Five (5) years management level experience in a high paced, military operational environment, OCONUS Air Field Operation preferred. Demonstrated experience setting up and implementing Weather Sensing Networks and Strategies

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION

US Citizens

Possesses or has the ability to obtain a DOD or DOS Security Clearance

 

JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

Knowledge of ALL principles and processes involved in weather observation/forecasting

Ability to collect, analyze and summarize data and to prepare clear and concise reports

Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently

Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and administrative details in a fast paced and constantly changing environment

Expert computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Word and Excel

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
