The Egg Handler supports the Egg Embryology Services of the Influenza Division (ID) of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) as part of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  This position performs all required procedures necessary for ensuring the quality delivery of egg embryos.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

On a regular and pre-defined schedule, retrieves eggs from loading dock, and sets into incubators.

 

Delivers incubated eggs to end user locations per standard operating procedure.  Ensures that no incubated eggs are left behind after a delivery in order to prevent continued incubation that results in hatching.

 

Accurately documents and communicates any malfunctions with the egg incubators, as well as any issues with the quality or amount of delivered eggs.

 

Maintains cleanliness of incubators, room, other equipment and general area of incubators on a regular schedule per the standard operating procedure.

 

Completes required checklists and documentation as indicated in the standard operating procedures.

 

Conducts regular meetings with laboratory focal points to discuss responsibilities and ongoing tasks.

 

Completes daily activity logs, and performs quality assurance of equipment and procedures.

 

Prepares and submits daily / weekly situation reports.

 

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

 

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output. 

 

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers.  Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources.  Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

 

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a minimum of four (4) years relevant embryology laboratory and warehousing experience.

 

CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / REGISTRATION

 

JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

Knowledge and understanding of embryology warehousing operations with ability to follow established processes and procedures

Ability to perform accurate deliveries and to maintain accuracy in required recordkeeping

Good organization and time-management skills

Ability to practice and promote required safety standards 

Working knowledge and ability to review, interpret and apply technical manuals, technical instructions and standard operating procedures in all aspects of quality assurance associated with the handling and delivery of egg embryos

Knowledge and ability to collect data, process forms and compose reports

Excellent verbal and written communications skills with ability to effectively interact with a variety of personnel

Proficient skills using Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

Ability to work both independently and in a team environment

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

         

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
