Health Communications Specialist
The Health Communications Specialist supports the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) Influenza Division (ID) in the development and implementation of national public health communications and marketing programs, projects and initiatives. This position applies communication science and marketing techniques to create and edit programmatic information products that communicate information to targeted audiences. Additionally, this position helps to provide communications training and consultation services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Supports NCIRD / ID communications related to programs, research, and activities.
Designs, creates and provides technical support for a variety of products suitable for media distribution (i.e., website, social media, television and radio, print, etc.).
At the request of ID staff, prepares responses to requests for information about ID activities. Creates responses that are tailored to the needs of various stakeholder groups, such as other CDC ad government agencies, the public, the legislature, media, associations, and members of the public health community.
Analyzes and prepares written and oral communications concerning ID operations, programs, surveillance and research activities. Gathers data and develops communications, which may pertain \to any and all ID related topics and includes laboratory and epidemiology surveillance, outbreak control, and influenza-related research.
Develops and maintains various multi-media communication venues for dispersal of influenza information to national and international health agencies, government agencies, print, radio and television media and the public.
May assist professionals in translating complex information into easy-to-understand health messages.
Develops products such as fact sheets, program briefings, Questions and Answers, program summaries, Web pages, and program-in-briefs.
Regularly monitors media outlets for any pertinent information related to influenza research, outbreaks, or programs. Summarizes and presents information to specified ID staff.
Responds to Agency Director’s requests and to influenza inquiries from the Department, Legislature, and the public.
Monitors all media outlets for influenza information and disseminates to Division, Center and Agency staff.
Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.
Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.
Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Organizational Communications, Health Communications, Marketing, Advertising, English or a related field of study and a minimum of three (3) years relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education / experience.

Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office Suite tools and their graphical components
Advanced skill with Adobe Creative Suite
Experience using visual media to create infographics, brochures and other communication and marketing materials
Ability to translate scientific literature into compelling visuals that resonate with targeted audiences spanning the spectrum of technical SME to lay person
Experience providing technical support for communication activities
Experience responding to departmental, legislative, and public inquiries
Operational knowledge and understanding of effective communication strategies, messaging and custom audience targeting
Proficiency in document development with ability to implement originality, a clear understanding of the information to be communicated, and the mission of the CDC
Knowledge of public health communications and marketing goals / objectives
Ability to evaluate analyze and disseminate information in a variety of venues
Exceptional verbal and written communications skills with ability to prepare a variety of documents and to liaise / influence others
Ability to present information for discussion with senior management, researchers and other public health professionals
Knowledgeable and proficient in the use of the English language as to professional grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization
Detail-oriented with ability to quickly grasp scientific and technical information

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
