The Dental Hygienist provides dental hygiene and promotes dental health. The position is responsible for performing procedures in compliance with the dental practice act in support of the dentist’s office, the hygiene department, patient treatment, hygiene maintenance, and re-care program.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Examines patient’s oral cavity to include mouth, throat, and pharynx, and records conditions of teeth and surrounding tissues. 

 

Refers patients who have abnormalities including cavities, defective fillings, suspicious growths, or periodontal disease to dentist.

 

Applies desensitizing and other topical agents to treat abnormalities including gingivitis and oral ulceration.

 

Instructs patients, individually and in groups, in proper oral hygiene care using materials to include teeth models, displays, slides, toothbrushes, dental floss, disclosing tablets and mirrors. 

 

Demonstrates proper techniques of brushing, flossing, and use of necessary periodontal aids. 

 

Explains the common causes of tooth decay and its relationship to general diet.

 

Takes impressions and constructs sports/safety mouth guards and soft night guards for bleaching.

 

Polishes restorations and applies pit and fissure sealants.

 

Performs chair side dental assisting when directed by the Officer-In–Charge of the dental clinic.

 

Records patients treated in records. 

 

Checks and maintains instruments to ensure proper working condition. 

 

Cleans, sharpens, and sterilizes instruments.

 

Coordinates patient workload, readiness, and scheduling. 

 

Utilizes the corporate dental application to enter patient specific workload and readiness status and also for patient scheduling.

 

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

 

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output. 

 

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers.  Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources.  Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

 

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

Associate's degree (A.A.) from an ADA accredited Dental Hygienist program and a minimum of six (6) months experience as a Hygienist to include three (3) months working experience within the past six (6) months.

 

CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / REGISTRATION

Current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice in at least one of the 50 states, and/or District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or territories of the United States.

Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association

Certified in Radiology through an ADA accredited dental hygiene program

 

JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

Operational knowledge and understanding of clinical dental assistance best practices and dental software

Working knowledge of state regulatory dental practice requirements with ability to comply (e.g., x-ray proficiency, OSHA training, etc.)

Exceptional customer service skills with ability to respond to requests in a professional, helpful and timely manner

Ability to maintain a pleasant and professional rapport with patients, dentists, staff members and community contacts

Ability to use tact in handling difficult individuals and/or situations

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and to maintain clean and sterile conditions

Ability to be reliable and punctual

Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative, team environment

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
