The Electrical / Electronics Engineer – Network Engineer applies engineering principles to design, implement and maintain computer networks for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) related to the Tower Data Link System (TDLS) and all FAA owned equipment and leased services involved in the transmission of data within FAA facilities and organizations. 



Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Designs, evaluates and implements computer network systems and services. 


Programs and develops software.


Selects appropriate data communications components, and configures them to meet FAA requirements.


Sets up and maintains both the test and operational networks.


Ensures all network components are configured for the FAA operational sites.


Maintains the network Access Control Lists (ACLs) and iptables.


Ensures all Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP) requirements are implemented into the TDLS enterprise system.


Conducts network system reviews, audits and testing.


Adheres to configuration management (CM) requirements, and performs changes as required.


Develops training materials for network users.


Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description, and Supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize output.  Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to any training made available by the company.


Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers.  Will relay any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and Human Resources.  Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.



Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering or Computer Science.  Degree must include 30 semester hours in a combination of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must be in statistics (not business statistics) and mathematics (including differential and integral calculus), or any combination thereof.

A degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field such as physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology may be substituted in lieu of the engineering degree, depending on other qualifications, and length and type of specialized experience.


Specialized advanced degrees appropriate to the field of technology may be substituted for a limited portion of the experience requirements. Specialized engineering experience on NAS systems and equipment is highly desirable. Experience in developing, revising, testing and maintaining hardware, software, and associated documentation applied to LAN is required based on position level. 


Electrical/Electronic Engineer 6 — Required degree and minimum of 15 years relevant experience

Electrical/Electronic Engineer 5 — Required degree and minimum of 12 years relevant experience

Electrical/Electronic Engineer 4 — Required degree and minimum of 9 years relevant experience

Electrical/Electronic Engineer 3 — Required degree and minimum of 6 years relevant experience

Electrical/Electronic Engineer 2 — Required degree and minimum of 3 years relevant experience

Electrical/Electronic Engineer 1 — Required degree



Knowledge and understanding of professional engineering principles, practices and procedures related to computer systems

Knowledge and understanding of systems software; computer systems architecture and integration; and software programming, development, review, audit, testing, configuration management, requirements and changes

In-depth technical knowledge of Local Area Network (LAN), software programming and development

Working technical knowledge of network system design, review, audits, testing, configuration management and change processes

Working knowledge of UNIX-like Operating Systems (i.e., Linux, Solaris, IRIX) and operating system administration (i.e., Red Hat Enterprise / CentOS Linux)

Working knowledge and understanding of test equipment such as Wireshark, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, or other data acquisition equipment

Advanced knowledge and proficiency in software design and implementation techniques using C / C++

Highly developed programming skills using network applications and software tools

Excellent verbal and written communications skills with ability to create technical training materials for network users

Excellent customer service and collaboration skills with ability to effectively interact and communicate at all levels of authority

Detail-oriented with proven analytical and problem-solving skills

Ability to prioritize tasks and to be self-motivated

Ability to effectively work individually or in a team environment



Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification

Ability to pass an FAA background investigation to work in a position of Public Trust

Must be U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder due to government or federal requirement



Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations such as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.



Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.



Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professiona1journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
